Indiana Senate candidate Andrew Dezelan got arrested with cocaine while campaigning door to door.

You literally cannot script this stuff, folks. Dezelan, a Democrat running in the Senate District 31 primary, was out pounding the pavement in a Fishers neighborhood on April 26, 2026, when a police officer rolled up and changed his entire political trajectory. As reported, the aspiring state senator now faces charges of cocaine possession and resisting law enforcement. Not exactly the platform he was hoping to run on.

Here is how it all went down. A resident in the Fishers neighborhood called police about somebody going around soliciting in their area. An officer showed up around 8 p.m. and found Dezelan near his vehicle. The cop started asking him about the distinction between canvassing and soliciting, and Dezelan claimed he had gotten the green light from a local HOA member to be there.

That is when things got spicy. According to WFYI, the officer noticed Dezelan was speaking rapidly, dripping with sweat, and had tiny constricted pupils. All three of those indicators point to somebody potentially under the influence of narcotics. The officer told Dezelan to step out of his car so he could be detained.

Did Dezelan cooperate? Absolutely not. Instead, he threw his vehicle into reverse. He did eventually get out, but not before a brief physical struggle with the officer that ended with him face down on the ground in handcuffs. A subsequent vehicle search turned up a clear Ziploc baggie with white powder inside. A field narcotics test confirmed it was cocaine.

The real kicker? Dezelan previously worked as the policy director for Indiana's Senate Democratic Caucus. This guy was literally an insider. He knows how the sausage gets made in the statehouse, and apparently he also knows where to find a baggie of blow before a neighborhood canvass.

Following the arrest, a Hamilton County judge set his bond at $10,000. His campaign messaging focuses on affordability, giving power back to local governments, and, wait for it, pushing for "sensible marijuana reforms that will drive dollars into needed services." The irony is so thick you could cut it with a credit card.

Dezelan is one of four Democrats competing in the primary for this seat, which covers northern Lawrence Township and most of Fishers. Four Republicans are also vying for the nomination on their side.

Neither Dezelan nor his lawyer responded to media inquiries from WFYI. However, according to The Indiana Lawyer, he made it abundantly clear that dropping out is not on his agenda. He released a statement saying his attorney advised him not to get into specifics about the case, but insisted he remains "committed to this campaign and to the people of this district."

He also acknowledged the situation "raises concern" and asked voters for patience while the legal process plays out. Bold strategy, Cotton. Let us see if it pays off for him.
