Eleven people got slapped with federal charges over a marriage fraud ring involving more than 1,000 fake weddings.
Attorney General Todd Blanche revealed the jaw-dropping crackdown during a Wednesday speech at the Justice Department, as reported here. The newly unsealed two-count indictment alleges these defendants ran their scam for over a decade, hooking up foreign nationals, primarily citizens of China, with bogus spouses so they could score legal immigration status in America. Some of these participants reportedly shelled out up to $100,000 for a single phony marriage. Let that sink in.
Blanche was fired up about it too. He declared that the DOJ is rooting out fraud everywhere, especially within the immigration system. He called these elaborate sham marriage operations a deliberate insult to American laws and promised zero tolerance under the Trump administration.
But here is where things get really spicy. Blanche did not stop at marriage fraud. He announced that U.S. attorney offices nationwide, along with the Criminal Division, have been ordered to team up with DHS and go after birth tourism schemes. On top of that, the civil division has been told to make denaturalization cases a top priority, targeting naturalized citizens who got their status through deception.
That denaturalization push could land squarely on the doorstep of a sitting member of Congress. Conservative commentator Benny Johnson pointed out that Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota could face consequences under this exact policy. Vice President JD Vance told Johnson in a March interview that Omar committed fraud when entering the United States and that she is a central figure in mounting fraud cases being investigated and prosecuted within her Somali community in Minneapolis.
Johnson wrote on X that the interview marked the first time there was on the record confirmation of Omar's alleged immigration fraud. He noted that lying on immigration paperwork qualifies as grounds for immediate denaturalization and added that Vance confirmed DHS was exploring enforcement options.
Blanche had been teasing this aggressive posture for months. Back in May, while still serving as acting AG, he told an audience of border security agents and contractors at the Border Security Expo in Phoenix that the DOJ was on pace to blow past the entire four year total of denaturalization filings submitted under the Biden administration, potentially within just a week.
He framed denaturalization as another critical tool for border security. His message was blunt. If you came into this country through fraud, the government is coming for you, and you will have to leave. He said the goal is protecting the integrity of the entire naturalization process.
So to recap. Over a thousand fake marriages exposed. Eleven defendants charged. A sitting congresswoman potentially in the crosshairs. And an attorney general who seems absolutely determined to make denaturalization the new favorite word in Washington. Politics in 2026 is truly something else.
