A sitting U.S. senator got publicly corrected by a race car driver. That alone should tell you everything about how Adam Schiff's weekend went.
So here's what happened. President Trump dropped the green flag at the Freedom 250 IndyCar race through the streets of Washington D.C. on Sunday, part of the nation's 250th birthday bash. Around 300,000 people showed up. The presidential motorcade did a lap around the track. People cheered. Racing happened against the backdrop of America's most famous monuments. It was, by all accounts, a genuinely great time.
Then Schiff logged on, as USA Journal reported.
The California senator fired off a post claiming Trump was blowing taxpayer cash on "self-aggrandizing distractions" while Americans deal with expensive gasoline. Strong words. Bold stance. One tiny problem. The Penske Corporation footed nearly the whole bill. Private money. Not your tax dollars. Not even close.
Schiff basically yelled at a birthday party that someone else paid for.
Enter Graham Rahal, IndyCar driver and son of racing icon Bobby Rahal, who responded with the calm authority of a man who actually knows what he's talking about. Rahal pointed out the event was privately funded, brought thousands of first-time visitors to the capital, generated real economic activity, and introduced people to museums, monuments, the White House, and American history they'd never seen in person.
In other words, exactly the kind of thing you'd think a senator would celebrate.
The White House also chimed in, because why let a perfectly good dunk go unfinished? Spokesman Davis Ingle called it "a complete disgrace" that Schiff was trashing the country during its historic 250th anniversary simply because of his feelings about the president.
Now let's zoom out on the comedy here. Schiff represents California. The state with some of the most brutal gas prices in the entire nation. He complained about fuel costs while representing a state that treats affordable gasoline like a conspiracy theory. He never mentions his own backyard. Not once. The irony is thick enough to pave a racetrack with.
The broader picture is even funnier. The America 250 celebrations have included UFC at the White House, an Army parade, and now IndyCar through D.C. Each one drew complaints from the same crowd. Democrats apparently decided their contribution to the country's birthday would be filing grievances about the party planning.
Three hundred thousand Americans from both parties, plus international fans, descended on Washington. They watched world-class racing. They visited the Smithsonian. They spent money at local businesses. They celebrated being American. A private corporation made it all possible.
And Adam Schiff's takeaway was to post a complaint about it.
Rahal set the record straight. The internet piled on. The White House twisted the knife. And the race itself was apparently fantastic.
Meanwhile, California still has rampant homelessness, a business climate that repels companies like bug spray, a governor facing a federal criminal investigation, and gas prices that require a second mortgage. But sure, Senator. Focus on the car race in D.C. that you got completely wrong. That seems productive.
