Buckle up, folks, because the GOP just had another family feud on the House floor and it was absolutely wild.
A whopping 46 Republican members of Congress crossed the aisle and teamed up with Democrats to torpedo an amendment from Rep. Chip Roy of Texas that would have slashed funding for federal judges he says are acting like political activists. That is not a typo. Forty six members of his own party stabbed him in the back, as reported by The American Tribune.
So what exactly did Roy want? His amendment, tucked into the fiscal 2026 appropriations package, proposed chopping 20 percent off the budgets belonging to the D.C. District Court and D.C. Circuit Court. But that was just the appetizer. The real main course? Completely eliminating the staff and office budgets for two specific judges, James Boasberg and Deborah Boardman.
Roy did not mince words on the House floor. He argued that the President was elected with a clear mandate from voters, and that colleagues on his side of the aisle supported carrying out those policies. Yet certain judges, Roy claimed, have been inserting their personal preferences and activist tendencies ahead of the will of the people.
He specifically called out Boasberg and Boardman as "particularly egregious" in showing what he described as contempt for the President while placing personal views above their judicial duties.
And why zero out their staff budgets specifically? Roy had receipts. He pointed to Dan Scavino and Mark Meadows as examples of individuals who were targeted and harassed through judicial proceedings. He told his colleagues to ask those people about how these courts operate.
The Texas Republican also reminded everyone that Congress created these courts in the first place, meaning lawmakers absolutely possess the authority to dissolve them entirely if they choose.
Both judges already had controversy swirling around them before this vote. Boasberg has drawn scrutiny for reportedly authorizing sealed subpoenas connected to politically charged investigations targeting Republican officials. Boardman raised eyebrows after giving what many considered an absurdly lenient prison sentence to a man who attempted to assassinate Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.
Despite all of that, nearly four dozen Republicans still voted the amendment down. The names of every single one were shared publicly on social media afterward.
This is exactly why so many conservative voters feel frustrated with their own party. You send people to Washington promising to fight the swamp, and then they turn around and protect the very institutions that many believe are weaponized against their own side. Roy brought a legitimate proposal to the floor with specific targets and clear reasoning, and his own teammates pulled the rug out.
The big question now is whether any of those 46 Republicans will face consequences from their voters back home, or if this whole saga just disappears into the political noise. Stay tuned, because this fight is far from over.
