Trump just said "absolutely" to banning Sharia law on live radio. During an interview with Glenn Beck, the president declared the United States has "one system" and left zero wiggle room about where he stands, as Trending Politics reported. He even pointed to London and Paris as cautionary tales, calling the situation there "ridiculous."
The timing here is chef's kiss. Michigan's Senate race features Democrat Abdul El-Sayed, who just won his primary and is now facing Republican Mike Rogers. Republicans have been hammering El-Sayed over comments he made criticizing efforts to prohibit courts from considering Sharia law. JD Vance piled on last week over remarks El-Sayed made at a 2022 CAIR banquet. El-Sayed's campaign confirmed he follows Sharia principles personally, including getting a Sharia-compliant mortgage, but insists he's not trying to impose religious law through government.
Trump told Beck his position was just "common sense" and not ideology, then dropped this gem: "Good politics is all about common sense anyway." He added that when they see Sharia law popping up, "we take it out." Under the actual U.S. constitutional system, federal and state law already remain controlling, and religious practices are fine as long as they don't override the law.
So to recap, the president went on radio to announce he'd ban something the Constitution already doesn't allow to override federal law. That's like signing an executive order declaring gravity mandatory.
