Immigration judges just lost their fight to speak at conferences without permission. The Supreme Court, in an unsigned order, reversed a Fourth Circuit ruling that had revived a lawsuit by the National Association of Immigration Judges challenging a Justice Department policy requiring approval before participating in "official" speaking engagements. The judges argued it was a First Amendment violation. The district court said nope, take it up through the Civil Service Reform Act instead. The Fourth Circuit tried to bring the case back to life, noting the Merit Systems Protection Board barely had enough members to function and questioning whether the whole review system was working as Congress intended. The Trump administration asked the Supreme Court to shut it down, calling it a "clear candidate for summary reversal." The high court agreed without blinking.
But wait, there's more. This wasn't even the administration's only Supreme Court win this week. It was the third. The Court also paused a federal judge's injunction that had blocked Trump's March executive order on mail-in voting procedures in 23 states and the District of Columbia. That order involves creating citizenship verification lists and prioritizing investigations of local officials who hand out federal ballots to ineligible voters. Then on Friday, Chief Justice Roberts personally stepped in to keep construction going on Trump's planned White House ballroom after a lower court tried to halt it. Three trips to the Supreme Court in one week and three victories. The man is treating the nation's highest court like a drive-thru window and somehow keeps getting exactly what he ordered.
