(Crankers) Speaking Monday at a Religious Liberty Commission meeting in Washington, D.C., President Donald Trump announced plans for the Department of Education to issue new guidance protecting prayer in public schools.
Trump made the remarks at the Museum of the Bible, founded by Hobby Lobby’s Green family. He did not offer a specific timeline or details on what the directive would entail.
“For most of our country’s history, the Bible was found in every classroom in the nation, yet in many schools today, students are indoctrinated with anti-religious propaganda,” the president said.
Since the 1960s, the U.S. Supreme Court has issued a series of rulings restricting prayer in public schools. In recent years, however, several states have sought to bring religion back into classrooms. In 2024, Louisiana became the first state to mandate that the Ten Commandments be displayed in public school classrooms, with Arkansas and Texas adopting similar measures this year.
The American Civil Liberties Union has vowed to challenge such efforts, saying it is working to uphold the separation of church and state. Supporters of prayer, however, argue that disallowing it is a violation of the First Amendment’s guarantee of religious freedom.
