A congressman who already lost his seat just filed articles of impeachment against the president.
Texas Democrat Al Green, who was defeated in his own primary runoff back in May, introduced fresh impeachment charges against Donald Trump on Monday, according to reports. The man is literally on his way out the door and decided to swing at the piñata one more time. You have to respect the commitment, even if the piñata is bolted to the ceiling.
Green's resolution accuses Trump of operating ICE and CBP as, and this is a direct quote, "his vicious, quota-driven, unaccountable paramilitary police forces." The charges also allege violations of the First, Fourth, Fifth, and Fourteenth Amendments. It's a constitutional buffet of grievances.
Now here's the thing. This is not remotely close to Green's first rodeo. The man has filed impeachment articles against Trump so many times he probably has a template saved on his desktop. During Trump's first term, he was literally the first Democrat to force impeachment articles onto the floor over Charlottesville, before party leadership was anywhere near ready. He's the guy who shows up to the surprise party three hours early and starts blowing up balloons by himself.
Just this past June, Green forced a vote on articles related to U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear sites. That one got tabled 344 to 79. Not a typo. Three hundred and forty four members, including the entire Democratic leadership, voted to shut it down. His own team tackled him.
Green also made headlines when he got escorted out of Trump's February State of the Union for holding a sign that read "BLACK PEOPLE AREN'T APES," referencing a deleted AI post from social media. Then in May, he lost his primary runoff for Texas's 18th District to Christian Menefee, which means his congressional clock is ticking down to zero.
So to summarize, a lame duck congressman with a perfect record of failed impeachment attempts decided the best use of his remaining time in office was to file another one. Meanwhile, Democrats are reportedly arguing amongst themselves about how aggressively to go after Trump before the 2026 midterms. Green apparently settled that debate for himself.
On the other side of the aisle, Trump told reporters he's sitting on roughly $850 million in fundraising and plans to spend heavily supporting Republican candidates in tight races. He also mentioned he'd chip in his own money. The Democratic National Committee, by contrast, had to put up its actual headquarters building as collateral just to secure $15 million. One side has a war chest. The other side mortgaged the building.
Trump's super PAC, MAGA Inc., hasn't actually spent anything in June or July despite adviser James Blair promising "substantial resources" are on the way. So the money exists. It's just relaxing somewhere. Perhaps on a beach.
Green, undeterred by math, history, and electoral defeat, posted his impeachment resolution on social media and directed people to his website. A man truly committed to the bit until the very last day of his career.
