The defamation lawsuit filed by President-elect Donald Trump against ABC News and “This Week” anchor George Stephanopoulos ended Saturday in a settlement agreement, the day after a federal judge ordered both Trump and Stephanopoulos to sit for depositions.
As per the agreement, ABC and Stephanopoulos agreed to pay $15M toward a Trump library/museum, pay $1 million toward Trump’s attorney fees for work led by Miami lawyer Alejandro Brito, and they have agreed to a written “clarification.”
The case, filed in Florida, centered on claims by Trump that Stephanopoulos defamed him during a broadcast by incorrectly stating that Trump was found guilty of rape in a civil trial. Trump’s legal team argued the statement caused significant harm to Trump’s reputation. The jury in that trial had explicitly marked “no” when asked if Trump was guilty of rape on the verdict form.
