With a $44 million opening from 4,315 sites, Sony’s “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” is on its way to a lucrative Thanksgiving box office. Jason Reitman’s sequel to the 1980s blockbuster is winning over audiences while beating forecasts.
Estimates for the film varied from $27 million to $35 million, with Sony estimating the lower end of the range. Instead, the picture has debuted to a similar level as the “Ghostbusters” reboot, which grossed $46 million in 2016 – a movie that true Ghostbusters fans disliked more than anything due to it being a terrible movie in general.
The production budget for “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” has been estimated to be around $75 million, which is roughly half of the budget for the much disliked 2016 reboot.
Ghostbusters: Afterlife returns numerous original stars and new faces. The main cast consists of: Mckenna Grace, Finn Wolfhard, Paul Rudd, Dan Aykroyd, Callie Coon, Ernie Hudson, and Sigourney Weaver. Sadly, famed actor Harold Ramis passed away in 2014 and was not able to portray his original role of Egon Spengler.
