President Donald Trump is going after NPR and PBS in his recent request to Congress, asking them to take back $9.4 billion in federal funding. This is funding that was likely identified by Elon Musk and the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
Some Democrats think this is retaliation or a way for Trump to silence the free press, but that’s an incorrect assessment. Trump appears to think the press can be free, but that doesn’t mean the taxpayers should pay for it.
Trump sent the request in on June 3rd and Congress will have 45 days to decide on it. Trump’s request to remove federal funding from NPR and PBS needs a majority vote in Senate “unlike most policies, which require a 60-vote threshold to overcome the filibuster,” as stated in a syndicated news article on MSN.
One can expect Democrats to speak out about this, while Republicans rush to get the funding removal approved.
