(Crankers) Mecklenburg County officials are laying out their plans for implementing Iryna’s Law, a set of new changes to the criminal justice system.
Iryna’s Law starts on December 1st after Iryna Zarutska was murdered on the light rail train several months ago. She came to America to escape war-like situations in the Ukraine, only to get stabbed for no reason by a ruthless scumbag thug.
The massive bill limits a judge’s power to release offenders accused of violent crimes. This should have always been the case, but I guess people making laws that support criminals are just really stupid people. Anyone with common sense would say a person accused of violent crimes should get locked up and no breaks. But that wasn’t the case and Zarutska’s killer was out in public.
The sheriff says the local detention center is already around 85% full, so they’re putting bunk beds in the rooms. And who even cares how stuffed the centers get. If people want to stay out of jail, then don’t break the law.
Iryna’s law provides funding for more district attorneys, but doesn’t allocate money for anything else at this time.
The law now calls for more individuals accused of violent crimes to be evaluated for involuntary mental health treatment if they have a history of mental illness.
Except we shouldn’t make an excuse for that either. Anyone who commits a violent crime should be locked away and mental illness should not be used as an excuse. It should be jail.
