“Fascism is good for business” – Marc Maron complains about Netflix platforming Dave Chappelle

(Crankers) Marc Maron was recently complaining about Netflix having a Dave Chappelle special. The complaint took place during an episode of Maron’s podcast where he mentioned Chappelle’s special from 2021 that included some anti-transgender content. Maron said “Fascism is good for business” and accused Netflix of doubling down on content that stirs controversy in hopes of gaining viewers.

Except, Marc Maron forgets that Dave Chappelle is one of the most prolific comedians in all of history. If Dave Chappelle is available to do a comedy special, then any network who signs it would instantly benefit from Chappelle’s massive fanbase.

Maron continued his complaint about Netflix, saying the brand could swiftly become “Reichflix,” referencing how the company seemed to valorize commodifying controversial creators for profit.

Specifically, Maron noted that when backlash from the trans community emerged after The Closer, Netflix realized within days that such criticism wouldn’t dent subscriber numbers—and they continued promoting Chappelle nonetheless. For Maron, this exemplifies “how fascism works in business.”

He also called out Netflix’s self-branding as a “home for everybody,” labeling it empty symbolism unless the platform puts its money—and key deals—behind diverse and marginalized creators rather than opportunistic, divisive figures. However, to contradict Maron’s claims, Netflix users pointed out that Netflix constantly involves unnecessary LGBT characters in shows – even when adds no value to the story. Netflix does this to be inclusive, which contradicts Maron’s claims.
