(Crankers) President Donald Trump announced via social-media that he was terminating the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) program for Somali nationals living in Minnesota, effective immediately.
Minnesota is home to the largest Somali-American community in the United States. Many of its members were granted TPS status in the early 1990s after fleeing civil war and unrest in Somalia. TPS allows eligible nationals from designated countries to live and work in the U.S. temporarily, when returning home would be unsafe.
The problem is that people like Ilhan Omar suggest she cares more about Somalia than she does America, and Minnesota is starting to feel like a third-world country to Americans. So there’s a bit of a culture war going on over there and Trump is trying to thin things out by getting rid of the criminals. For the people who cause no harm and don’t get in trouble, then they’re fine. It’s the people causing issues that Trump has a problem with.
In his announcement, Trump accused Minnesota of being “a hub of fraudulent money-laundering activity” and claimed Somali “gangs” were terrorising residents of the state. He asserted that “billions of dollars are missing” and said his action was intended to end the protections for those nationals.
While the policy change affects Somali nationals under TPS, the number of individuals directly impacted is relatively small. A 2024 congressional estimate put the number of Somali nationals protected under TPS nationwide at roughly 705.
The move aligns with other efforts by the Trump administration to withdraw or reduce immigration protections for several groups, including Venezuelans, Haitians, Cubans and Syrians.
Legal, policy and immigrant-rights groups are expected to challenge the decision, arguing that revoking TPS protections without proper review could expose vulnerable individuals to danger and undermine existing immigration-law precedents.
