(Crankers) The Supreme Court granted the Trump administration’s emergency appeal to temporarily halt a court order requiring full funding of SNAP food aid payments during the government shutdown, even though some states’ residents have already received the funds.
A judge had set a deadline for the Republican administration to make the payments through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program by Friday. However, the administration appealed to suspend any orders forcing it to spend beyond the available contingency fund, opting instead to proceed with partial SNAP payments for the month.
After a Boston appeals court declined to intervene immediately, Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson issued an order late Friday to pause the requirement for full SNAP payments until the appeals court decides whether to impose a longer pause. Jackson oversees emergency cases from Massachusetts.
Her order remains in effect until 48 hours after the appeals court rules, allowing the administration time to appeal again to the Supreme Court if necessary.
