New York Jets QB retires after tough decision

By Frank BojaziApril 30, 2025Updated:September 1, 2025 News

(Crankers.com) Things are getting tougher for the football fans in New York. Jordan Travis, the former Florida State University (FSU) quarterback and 2024 fifth-round NFL Draft pick by the New York Jets, announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 24. The decision follows a severe leg injury sustained during his final college game on November 18, 2023.

In a heartfelt handwritten statement shared on social media, Travis expressed gratitude for his football journey and the support he received throughout his career. He stated, “On November 18, 2023, my life took an unexpected turn. I gave everything I had to the rehab process, but despite my efforts, my leg never responded the way we hoped. After much prayer and consultation with my doctors and medical team, I have been medically …”

Travis’s injury occurred during a game against North Alabama, abruptly ending a season where he had led FSU to an 11-0 start and was considered a Heisman Trophy contender. Despite intensive rehabilitation efforts, medical professionals advised him to retire due to the injury’s lasting effects. He spent the entire 2024 season on the Jets’ non-football injury list and did not appear in any NFL games.

During his time at FSU, Travis became one of the program’s most decorated quarterbacks. He holds multiple school records, including total offense (10,665 yards), passing touchdowns (65), and quarterback rushing touchdowns (31). He also led the Seminoles to a perfect 11-0 start in 2023 and finished fifth in Heisman Trophy voting. Over his FSU career, Travis amassed 8,644 passing yards, 1,910 rushing yards, and accounted for 99 total touchdowns. He was named ACC Player of the Year in 2023.

The New York Jets organization expressed support for Travis’s decision. General Manager Darren Mougey stated, “Jordan has informed us of his intent to retire due to the injury he sustained while at Florida State… It is unfortunate that he was unable to get back on the field after working so hard. We support his decision and wish him only the best,” as quoted on NY Post .

Travis’s retirement is a poignant reminder of the physical toll that football can exact on its players. His story has resonated with fans and fellow athletes alike, highlighting the unpredictable nature of sports careers and the importance of health and well-being.
