(Crankers.com) The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) stopped providing special security for former Vice President Kamala Harris on Saturday, September 6, 2025, just days after it had begun. The temporary protection was initiated after President Trump rescinded her Secret Service detail.
In late August 2025, President Trump canceled Harris’s Secret Service detail. Before leaving office, former President Joe Biden had extended the protection for his vice president beyond the standard six months, to an 18-month period that would have lasted until July 2026.
In response to the termination of her federal protection, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) and the LAPD began providing security for Harris, a Brentwood resident, but the union disliked the concept of that because it wasted resources that should be on crime cases – not protecting a woman wealthy enough to provide her own security.
The Los Angeles Police Protective League, the union representing LAPD officers, criticized the decision to use city resources to protect Harris, a multimillionaire. The union stated that officers were being pulled from their normal duties and that Los Angeles taxpayers should not foot the bill.
Amid the backlash, the LAPD ended its temporary protection on Saturday, September 6. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, who had arranged for the city’s support, released a statement saying the LAPD’s role was always intended to be temporary.
The California Highway Patrol continues to provide security for Harris, citing state law that allows protection for former state constitutional officers if a threat assessment supports it.
The change in security occurred shortly before Harris was scheduled to begin a 15-stop book tour for her memoir, “107 Days.”
