(Crankers) OH SNAP! Federal agents recovered $100,000 in what appears to be an alleged SNAP fraud scandal. All of this going on while something like 42 million people wait around for their benefits. Really cool, right?
This took place at a store in in Cleveland where people were allegedly trading in their SNAP benefits and getting material items in return. Anything from clothes, appliances, and even cash in return for the SNAP.
Feds apparently recovered $100,000 during their investigation. Wow… I guess the alleged suspects should’ve hid their money better. Or you know, maybe don’t break the law.
MoneyWise had some quotes from the News 5 Cleveland report. A Secret Service special agent said: “Exchanging the SNAP benefits for cash is the most common form of trafficking for the SNAP program.”
The investigation lasted around 11 months and discovered at least 17,000 illegal transactions during the time. The owner of the store where the alleged crimes took place has been indicted on several felonies.
Have they considered using SNAP for things that it’s actually designated for? Was it worth it to get charged with felonies?
