Mitch “Mr. Freeze” McConnell will lead a subcommittee overseeing defense spending while he prepares new roles for the future. Perhaps the guy who stands at a podium until someone escorts him away shouldn’t be leading anything besides a round of poker at the retirement home. McConnell will end his role as the longest-serving Senate leader, thank goodness, as the GOP gets ready for a new-look majority control chamber coming up soon.
The next Senate majority leader will be John Thune, out of South Dakota, who’s been a deputy to McConnell. Thune has probably seen more Mr. Freeze action than we have, but would Thune do a better job? McConnell just doesn’t seem like he can function properly anymore, and it would be in his best interest to retire. He’s 82, so what is he working for? A report on US News quoted McConnell:
“America’s national security interests face the gravest array of threats since the Second World War,” the senator said in a statement. “At this critical moment, a new Senate Republican majority has a responsibility to secure the future of U.S. leadership and primacy.”
McConnell frequently evokes Ronald Reagan’s mantra of “peace through strength” when discussing foreign policy risks and how the U.S. should respond. McConnell’s stance could clash with President-elect Donald Trump’s “America First” doctrine on foreign affairs. McConnell worked with Trump on a tax cuts package and the appointment of conservative judges — including three justices to the nine-member Supreme Court — during Trump’s first term as president.
Despite McConnell’s full career being what it is, he’s been facing critics from GOP supporters on topics like sending money/weapons to Ukraine. At this point in his career, most people would be fine with Mitch stepping down, retiring, and giving the keys to let someone else drive. There’s simply nothing left for Mitch McConnell to accomplish in his career that he hasn’t done already. Why does an 82-year-old want to get up and go work for the government? It can’t be fun or enjoyable to him. Or is it?
