President Joe Biden transferred presidential power to Kamala Harris for 85 minutes as he went under anesthesia for a routine colonoscopy. Kamala Harris took his duties temporarily as he transferred power before his medical procedure at Walter Reed Medical Center.
This is just part of Biden’s annual physical, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said in a statement. “As was the case when President George W. Bush had the same procedure in 2002 and 2007, and following the process set out in the Constitution, President Biden will transfer power to the Vice President for the brief period of time when he is under anesthesia. The Vice President will work from her office in the West Wing during this time.”
But the presidential duties didn’t last long for Vice President Harris as after transferring power at 10:10 am, Biden completed his colonoscopy and resumed his duties as president at 11:35 on Friday morning.
Here is the official statement from Jen Psaki (@PressSec): .@POTUS spoke with @VP and @WHCOS at approximately 11:35 am this morning. @POTUS was in good spirits and at that time resumed his duties. He will remain at Walter Reed as he completes the rest of his routine physical.
Psaki also added: “I will note that, you know, the president, when he selected her to be his running mate, obviously he knew he was making history — was making history that was long overdue, in our view, and part of that was selecting someone who would serve by your side as your partner, but also step in if you were — if there was a reason to, and that includes the application of the 25th Amendment as was done this morning.”
