In a recent interview with Vogue, the Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence complained about the pay gap in Hollywood despite her net-worth being around $175 million, which is more than most people in the entire country of America.
Lawrence, who was never afraid to express her views, recently talked about the pay disparity she still experiences in the industry. Many female actors in Hollywood have spoken out about how much less they were paid than their male counterparts for comparable roles in movies or on television. However, critics didn’t like her slamming the pay gap when her net-worth was so high, suggesting that she was not able to read the room and complaining about money while being rich and wealthy. Meanwhile, normal everyday Americans continue to struggle and she does not experience problems like that.
The wage gap between men and women continues to exist; according to data from the Economic Policy Institute, it was 22.1% in 2021. “It doesn’t matter how much I do,” Lawrence said, according to Entrepreneur, “I’m still not going to get paid as much as that guy, because of my v-gina.”
Lawrence was speaking broadly and chose not to mention any specific projects during this interview. Here is one of the examples. Namely, Lawrence received only 7% of the profits from the 2013 hit American Hustle, which made over $251 million worldwide, according to leaked Sony emails, while her male coworkers received 9%.
“I didn’t get mad at Sony. I got mad at myself. I failed as a negotiator because I gave up early. I didn’t want to keep fighting over millions of dollars that, frankly, due to two franchises, I don’t need,” Lawrence wrote of the leaks a couple of years ago. ” I would be lying if I didn’t say there was an element of wanting to be liked that influenced my decision to close the deal without a real fight. I didn’t want to seem ‘difficult’ or ‘spoiled.’ At the time, that seemed like a fine idea, until I saw the payroll on the Internet and realized every man I was working with definitely didn’t.”
Vanity Fair also revealed last year that Lawrence received $5 million less in compensation than co-star Leonardo DiCaprio, which translated to 83 cents for every dollar earned by DiCaprio. “It’s extremely uncomfortable to inquire about equal pay. And if you do question something that appears unequal, you’re told it’s not gender disparity, but they can’t tell you what exactly it is,” Lawrence said at the time. (Editor’s note: Leonardo DiCaprio is a thousand times more talented and popular than Lawrence is, in my opinion.)
According to recent data, Hollywood’s average gender pay disparity is about $1 million per production. According to reports, Jennifer Lawrence is worth $175 million. Lawrence, known for her beauty, talent, and sense of humor, is one of the youngest actresses to receive an Oscar. Lawrence is now one of the wealthiest Hollywood actresses because of the staggering success of her movies. She owns four luxurious homes in various American cities. She owns Tesla, Cadillac, Audi, Volkswagen, and Chevrolet cars.
It should be noted that in most entertainment businesses, such as sports, movies, etc – the pay is often decided based on how much revenue they can bring to the business. A top actor like Leonardo DiCaprio will likely always earn more because he’s a top actor, just like top performing athletes with millions of fans get paid more than the guy who sits the bench and has very little fans. It’s all about who brings in the revenue.
Jennifer Lawrence is well-known, but she could likely be replaced by just about any other female actor out there and most people wouldn’t notice or care.
