As Russian soldiers aim to take control of Ukraine’s capital, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the President of Ukraine, has broadcast recordings from the streets of Kyiv to encourage civilians to keep fighting. He turned down a US evacuation offer and stated he would stay in Kyiv, according to a tweet from Ukraine’s embassy in the United Kingdom.
According to the tweet, Zelenskyy informed the US that what he needed was ammunition, not a ride.
In a video he broadcast on social media, he remarked that the fighting continued and that Ukraine had managed to repel enemy strikes. He went on to say that the Ukrainian army was not putting down arms, claiming that their main weapon was the love for their country and their children. Ukraine plans to defend all of this, per report.
According to the Ukrainian Embassy claims, Pope Francis called the President of Ukraine on Saturday and expressed his pain for the country’s agony. The embassy reported the chat in a tweet, and an embassy official told Reuters that it took place around 4 p.m. but that no other details could be released.
The meeting took place a day after the Pope paid an unexpected visit to the Russian embassy to express his worry about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, breaking with diplomatic etiquette for the first time.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy, a former comedian, stands out for his bravery and refusal to flee the capital while rockets fall, making him an unlikely hero of the twenty-first century.
On the third day of the battle, Russian forces encircled Kyiv on Saturday. According to military observers, the main goal is to approach the capital and topple Zelenskyy and his government, replacing them with someone more loyal to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
