A GoFundMe page aiming to raise $5 million to bail out an ex-con suspected of killing six people when he drove through a Wisconsin Christmas parade was removed from the site.
The fundraiser for Darrell Brooks came amid anger that he’d even been offered bail, with prosecutors acknowledging he was free to crash through Waukesha revelers after being released on an “inappropriately low” bond for another suspected vehicle attack earlier this month.
According to screenshots initially posted by Law Enforcement Today, the fundraising campaign insisted Brooks was a victim of a “racist” legal system, using hashtags such as #RacismIsReal and #BLM.
It was put up by James Norton, who referred to the convicted pedophile and alleged mass murderer as “our dear friend.”
Fundraisers requested that he be treated equally to everyone else in the country and that he be released until proved guilty.
GoFundMe, on the other hand, told The Washington Post that the fundraiser was “removed before any contributions were raised because it violated GoFundMe Terms of Service.”
A spokesman for GoFundMe said the person behind it was also “barred from using the GoFundMe platform for any future fundraising.”
