Frederick Mayor Michael O’Connor, a Democrat in Maryland, vows to protect illegal immigrants by using taxpayer funds to help cover legal fees for anyone facing a Trump deportation. O’Connor plans to use part of the local budget to be a “Legal Advocacy Fund” in the event that mass deportations of illegal immigrants take place. This has residents of Frederick in an uproar as many believe their tax funds should be used for citizens only.
O’Connor said, according to WBFF Baltimore, “Ensuring they have the legal support they need to stand strong and remain in this community they have chosen to call home.” President-elect Donald Trump wants migrants to enter the country legally, rather than cross the border illegally which is breaking the law.
WBFF quoted several residents on the issue. Their report implied that most people were OK with the goal of helping people out – and of course a pathway to citizenship. But it appears that most people did NOT want their tax dollars paying for any of it.
Frederick resident Rachel Pett said, “I don’t like the idea. I’d rather our taxpayer money go towards American citizens.” Another resident, named Ryan Head, said, “You break the law, it’s just what happens. Nobody helped me pay for my attorney fees when I break the law. So, why should we be paying for theirs out of taxpayer money?”
