Maybe Fox News parting ways with Tucker Carlson was a bad idea in the long run? Tucker is busy doing his own thing and cable news continued without him, but was it a good idea or bad idea for Fox News to go that route? 2023 closed out with a tough stack against cable television as people keep cutting off the providers in favor of streaming services – myself included. Fox News stayed on top – but even their stats dipped to some numbers they haven’t seen in years.
Fox News stayed on top for the “22nd year in a row leading cable news in both total viewers and the demo in both total day and prime time viewers” according to Mediaite. MSNBC was the only network to GROW – but not enough to take down Fox News. CNN keeps slumping, having their lowest numbers since 2014 – but they DID beat MSNBC in a specific demographic for ten years in a row. Weird, right? Not just yet, but Mediate said this:
While Fox has remained atop the industry, the network saw an 18 percent drop in year-over-year total viewers from 1.49 million to 1.2 million – its lowest total viewership since 2015. MSNBC averaged 784,000 total day viewers, up from 733,000 the year before. CNN, meanwhile, averaged 482,000 total day viewers, a 15 percent drop from 2022’s 568,000 average viewers.
In the total day demo, MSNBC was up 5 percent with 87,000 total average viewers – landing in third. CNN was in second with 95,000 – a 22 percent drop year over year. Fox led the pack with 150,000 total average viewers – a 34 percent drop from the previous year.
Wait? 150,000 total average viewers? I know people who run websites that get more views than that on a daily basis. Are we in the middle of the end of cable news television? To be fair, I can’t stand any of these shows and I think they’re all terrible. They’re not news, they’re people saying what you want to hear. They’re catering to an audience in hopes of higher ratings. Real news just tells you what happened and doesn’t add any commentary to it – but that’s boring and doesn’t spark outrage, clicks, or views. Is the mainstream media finally doomed?
Tucker Carlson remains a free man with full freedom to express his views and nothing to hold him back.
