CNN is closing its Atlanta headquarters. According to a CNN spokeswoman, after more than three decades, CNN is transferring its whole operation back to modernized quarters at the 30-acre Turner Techwood complex in Midtown this year. CNN’s move-out has been planned for years. Years ago, CNN effectively relocated to New York, and the huge CNN Center was gradually demolished.
CNN has already relocated to the new site for its master control operations. Although CNN has major operations for CNN International and its digital platform in Atlanta, the weekday anchors now all work out of New York or Washington, D.C. There is still a couple of weekend CNN shows in Atlanta, reported AJC.
For many years, CNN Center was used as corporate headquarters and an international calling card. It served as both the location of Ted Turner’s first 24-hour news station and a popular tourist destination, with the network’s emblem becoming part of the Atlanta skyline.
In order to save money, AT&T, CNN’s prior parent company, sold CNN Center to real estate companies Rialto Capital Management and CP Group in 2021 for about $164 million.
Warner Bros. Discovery, the company that acquired CNN, is currently preparing a smaller location at the Midtown Techwood building that Ted Turner bought in 1979 to launch CNN.
Other cable networks like TNT, TBS, Turner Classic Movies, and Cartoon Network, as well as sports programming, have offices near Techwood.
The long-standing CNN sign will be dismantled as well as the enormous CNN logo on the pavement along Centennial Olympic Park Drive.
CNN President Tom Johnson expressed his sadness, adding that his friends will miss the CNN logo on top of the center. According to him, the logo meant a lot to all of them.
Ted Turner established CNN Studio Tours to promote the brand by giving fans a behind-the-scenes glimpse. He purposefully structured the tour into the framework of the newsroom, allowing for views into the newsroom without interfering with the flow of business.
Long into the 2010s, 300,000 people would come to see it annually. When the pandemic struck, the tour came to an end and never resumed.
