As President Joe Biden prepares to face the country and give his annual State of the Union Address, he’s been hit with some of the worst news of his term. According to Fox News, a new survey finds that a large plurality of Americans say they are worse off, financially, under Biden than they were under former President Donald Trump.
According to the ABC News/Washington Post poll, 41 percent of Americans say they are in a tougher financial situation since Biden’s inauguration in Jan. 2021, while just 16 percent say they are better off. That is the highest number saying they are worse off in the poll’s 37-year history.
During Trump’s term, only 13 percent said they were worse off versus 25 percent who said they were doing much better financially. During Trump’s four-year term, inflation was one-fourth what it is now; it’s been above 7 percent for most of Biden’s two years in office and remains at a 40-year high.
Fox News added:
The poll also showed Biden with a 42% approval rating and a 53% disapproval rating. When asked about the upcoming 2024 presidential election, 62% of Americans said they would be disappointed or angry of Biden were to be re-elected, while just 36% said they would be enthusiastic or satisfied.
Trump fared better in the same question at this point in his presidency – 56% of Americans said they would be disappointed or angry if he were to be re-elected, compared to 43% who would be enthusiastic or satisfied.
The survey also found in a rematch, Trump beats Biden 48-44 percent, though Trump is the only one of the two who has officially declared his 2024 candidacy for the White House. Biden is expected to do so in the coming weeks, though some find it odd that he hasn’t done so already, leaving open the possibility that he won’t.
But that doesn’t mean Vice President Kamala Harris will automatically rise to the occasion. Recent surveys put her overall approval rating well below Biden’s, and his approval rating isn’t stellar, to begin with. As for the GOP, Trump’s UN ambassador, former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, has indicated she will run for the party’s nomination. And another favorite, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, continues to be mentioned as well.
