(Crankers) A federal judge delivered bad news to the Trump administration when she ordered an indefinite stop to new construction and the shutdown of ‘Alligator Alcatraz’ in Florida. It was U.S. District Judge Kathleen Williams who ordered the shutdown and told Florida state officials to start removing the fencing, lights, generators and much of the other equipment that kept the holding facility running.
Florida’s state officials have 60 days to get Alligator Alcatraz shut down and all detainees moved out. DHS is in the middle of transporting detainees to other facilities.
The purpose of Alligator Alcatraz was to have a place for detainees who were awaiting deportation, but the federal judge ultimately made her decision. She likely based it on complaints about the food, conditions, or inability for the detainees to have access to private space to meet with their lawyers. Most of these claims were disputed by officials, making it somewhat unclear what was really happening and who’s telling the truth.
