New York Mayor Eric Adams considers moving the New York Knicks’ famed home of Madison Square Garden and is being criticized because voters want him working on real issues such as crime. Indeed, it was reported by the New York Post a few days ago that New York City Mayor Eric Adams reopened discussions about moving the famous home of the Knicks: the Madison Square Garden. Adams said that he would like to discuss the possibility with the Knicks and MSG owner James Dolan.
Adams is supporting the project for its potential in terms of housing investments, said the report. According to the Post, Adams said, “The Penn Station project is a crucial one. I think that area is ripe for housing, is ripe for real investment … We have to build more housing. There’s a real need for housing in the city and particularly in areas that have access to transportation, good health care, good schools.”
Penn Station, which for years has sat under MSG, “the world’s most famous arena,” is in the process of being redeveloped in New York. However, the New York Post reported that Adams has been “open to having conversations” with MSG’s owner, James Dolan, about a potential move.
Adams’ main reason for bringing it up was the housing crisis in the city, which has become a top priority on his agenda. The plan to rebuild the area is also supported by Governor Kathy Hochul, according to the Post. During the Penn Station redevelopment plan’s development, Dolan and Related Companies had a secret conversation about possibly moving MSG to Hudson Yards.
“If (the housing plan) fits into Madison Square Garden moving into another location, maybe we’ll help the Knicks win,” Adams stated about a franchise that won its first playoff series since 2012. “We should be willing to speak with Mr. Dolan and see how it fits into the overall scheme of that area.”
The move has been opposed by Dolan for some time. MSG told the New York Times in 2013 that moving the arena because of Penn Station reform would be “incongruous.” These comments followed shortly after the arena underwent a $1 billion renovation.
As part of Penn Station’s renovation, architectural and engineering design, the Metropolitan Transit Authority approved a $57 million contract. Janno Lieber, CEO of MTA, said, “We’re going to add a ton of vertical circulation. That’s stairs, escalators and elevators to get people on and off the platforms.”
MSG’s current location is between 31st and 33rd Streets and Seventh and Eighth Avenues. The Knicks will host the Detroit Pistons on October 21 for their first official Garden Party of the 2022 -2023 season.
It’s becoming obviously clear that this move – if it were to happen – might not please the fans of the New York Knicks and New York Rangers. The fame of the place should not be ignored: It was the site of several important events, including the 1970 NBA Finals won by the Knicks and Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier’s “The Fight of the Century” in 1971.
Mayor Eric Adams might have to think twice before making a final decision.
